What To Do When You Reach Your Spend Limit

What the spend limit messages mean and how to get back to work.

Your organization can set monthly limits on AI spend in elvex. When a limit is reached, elvex stops processing new requests until the limit is raised or the month resets. Your threads, files and settings are not affected.

There are two messages you might see.

“Personal monthly spend limit reached”

You have reached the limit set for your own usage. Other people in your organization can still use elvex.

What to do

  • Ask an elvex admin at your organization to raise your limit, or

  • Wait for your limit to reset at the start of next month.

Your limit may have been set for you individually, for a group you belong to, or as a default for everyone. The email you receive when you reach it says which.

“Monthly spend limit reached”

Your whole organization has reached its limit. Nobody can send new requests until it is raised or the month resets.

What to do

  • If you are an Admin or Owner, raise the limit in Admin → Cost Management. See Set a company spend limit.

  • Otherwise, contact an administrator at your organization.

When limits reset

Limits reset at 00:00 UTC on the first day of each month. Depending on your time zone, that may be the evening of the last day of the month or the morning of the first.

Common questions

I got an email saying I’m at 75% or 90%. Do I need to do anything?

No. It is a heads-up, and nothing is blocked yet. If you expect to need more this month, ask an admin now.

Why did my request go through and then the next one was blocked? The limit is checked before each request. A request that was already running when you reached the limit is allowed to finish, which is also why your spend can end slightly above your limit.

A long task stopped partway through. Why? Tasks that take several steps are checked at each step. If you reach the limit partway through, the task stops at the next step.

Does this affect Slack, Microsoft Teams or the API? Yes. The limits apply wherever you use elvex. API requests made over a limit are rejected with HTTP status 429.

Can I see how much I’ve used? The emails show your usage and your limit. For up-to-date figures, ask an admin, who can see everyone’s spend in Cost Management.

Why do I keep getting the email every day? While you are over your limit, elvex sends a daily reminder. It stops when your limit is raised or the month resets.
