The elvex Agent Builder

Instead of staring at empty text fields wondering what to write, you simply describe your goals and the Agent Builder does the hard work of translating your vision into a working agent configuration.

What is the elvex Agent Builder?

The Agent Builder is an interactive assistant built directly into the agent creation experience. When you click the Create Agent button, the Agent Builder automatically appears to help you configure your new agent through a conversational interface.

The Agent Builder asks you questions about your agent's purpose, expected outcomes, and use cases, then generates the configuration fields—including name, description, rules, and context—based on your responses.

When to Use the Agent Builder

You might use the Agent Builder when:

  • You're creating a new agent and want guidance on how to configure it effectively

  • You have a clear goal in mind but aren't sure how to translate it into agent rules and instructions

  • You want to save time by having the configuration fields auto-generated rather than writing them manually

  • You're new to elvex and want help understanding what makes an effective agent configuration

How to Use the Agent Builder

Starting the Agent Builder

  1. Navigate to the Agents page in elvex

  2. Click the Create Agent button to open the agent creation interface

  3. The Agent Builder will automatically appear to assist you

Working with the Agent Builder

The key to getting great results from the Agent Builder is to focus on goals and outcomes, not specific processes.

Do this:

  • "I need an agent that helps my sales team quickly respond to customer questions about pricing and product features using the product catalog and the pricing database"

Not this:

  • "The agent should search the pricing database, then format the results, then check the product catalog..."

The Agent Builder will ask follow-up questions to understand your needs better. Answer these questions to help it create a more tailored configuration.

Applying the Suggestions

Once the Agent Builder has gathered enough information, it will generate suggestions for your agent configuration.

  1. Review the suggested name, description, rules, and context

  2. Click Apply Suggestions to populate the agent configuration fields

  3. The Agent Builder will fill out the text fields automatically

Completing Your Agent Setup

The Agent Builder handles the core configuration, but you'll still need to complete a few manual steps:

  1. Connect Datasources: The agent builder will connect datasources it thinks makes sense but make sure to validate and select any relevant files, databases, or websites your agent needs to reference

  2. Enable Integrations: Activate any integrations (like Outlook, Slack, etc.) your agent will use

  3. Set Security and Permissions: Configure who can access and use this agent

  4. Configure AI Model (optional): Select the AI model that best suits your needs

  5. Click Save & Publish to make your agent available

Reopening the Agent Builder

If the Agent Builder closes for any reason during the setup process, you can reopen it by clicking the elvex head icon in the agent creation interface.

What the Agent Builder Doesn't Do

The Agent Builder focuses on generating the core configuration fields. It does not:

  • Configure security and permissions settings

  • Enable integrations

  • Publish your agent

These steps require your manual input to ensure your agent is set up according to your organization's needs and security requirements.

What to Do After Building Your Agent

Once you've completed the setup and published your agent:

  1. Test Your Agent: Use the testing interface to interact with your agent and ensure it's working as expected

  2. Refine and Iterate: Based on your test results, edit the configuration to improve your agent's performance. Your agent can help with this self-improvement process—ask it to suggest updated rules based on the outcomes you're seeing. For example, if responses are too long, ask your agent "Can you suggest updated rules to make responses more concise?" and it will provide recommendations you can apply to its configuration

  3. Share with Your Team: Configure permissions to make the agent available to the right people in your organization

Common Questions

Can I edit the configuration after the Agent Builder generates it?

Yes! The Agent Builder's suggestions are a starting point. You can edit any of the generated fields before or after publishing your agent.

What if I don't like the Agent Builder's suggestions?

You can either provide more context to the Agent Builder to get better suggestions, or you can manually edit the configuration fields yourself. The Agent Builder is optional—you can always configure your agent manually.

Do I have to use the Agent Builder every time I create an agent?

No. The Agent Builder is there to help, but experienced users can skip it and fill out the configuration fields directly if they prefer.

Can other people see my agent's configuration?

Yes. Anyone who has access to use your agent can also view its configuration, including the rules, context, connected datasources, and integrations. This transparency helps users understand how the agent works and what it can do.
