AI agents work best when they understand the context they're operating in — who you are, what you're working on, or what a shared Space is for. But manually keeping that context up to date is tedious, and letting elvex update it entirely on its own can sometimes capture details you didn't intend to save. Automatic context extraction solves this by giving you full control over how elvex learns and updates context, whether that context belongs to you personally or to a shared Space.
Both Personal Context and Space Context use the same underlying extraction system, so the modes and behavior described here apply whether you're configuring your own personal context or the context of a Space you manage.

The Three Extraction Modes
Whether you're configuring your Personal Context or a Space's context, the same three modes are available:
Automatic: Context updates are applied immediately in the background with no action required from you. elvex extracts relevant facts from conversations and saves them automatically.
Get Approval: elvex presents proposed updates in a review UI, so you can approve, edit, or reject each one before anything is saved.
Manual: Automatic extraction is completely disabled. Context only updates when you or a Space manager edits it directly.
Personal Context vs. Space Context
While both use the same three modes, there are a few important differences in how extraction applies:
Personal Context is private to you. You configure your own extraction mode from your My Space settings, under the Context tab, and it only ever reflects your own conversations.
Space Context is shared with everyone in the Space. Only users with edit access to the Space can change its extraction mode, since the decision to let a Space "learn" from member conversations affects everyone who relies on that shared context. Space context extraction is also only triggered when the Space appears in the context strip of a conversation — not when it's added as a one-off attachment — and members can opt individual conversations out entirely using the off-the-record toggle in the chat box toolbar.
Common Questions
Which mode should I use?
If you want context to stay current with zero effort, use Automatic. If you want oversight before anything is saved, use Get Approval. If you'd rather curate context entirely yourself, use Manual.
Can I change the extraction mode later?
Yes. You can switch modes at any time, whether for your Personal Context or for a Space you manage. Changing modes does not affect facts already saved.
Does switching modes remove context elvex already learned?
No. Changing the extraction mode only affects how new facts are captured going forward. Existing context is not deleted or modified when you switch modes.
Why can't I change the extraction mode for a Space?
Only users with edit access to a Space can change its extraction mode. If you're a read-only member, the setting will appear disabled. This keeps the decision to let a Space's context evolve automatically in the hands of whoever owns or manages it.
